2017 Summer Institute in Digital Literacy

Overview. This six-day institute focuses on how literacy is changing as a result of emerging media and technologies. We'll consider the implications of this cultural and technological shift for teaching and learning. Join us in exploring innovative approaches now being used by K-12 educators, librarians, and college and university faculty. You will learn how to conduct project-based inquiry using a variety of digital texts, tools and technologies, which will help create challenging and engaging learning opportunities for you and your students.  

Who Will Participate? The Summer Institute in Digital Literacy attracts a wide range of talented people, including K-12 educators, school and public librarians, college and university faculty, graduate students, researchers, ed tech entrepreneurs, media professionals, and media literacy and youth media leaders in the informal learning sector.

Location: URI College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS) campus, 80 Washington Street, Downtown Providence RI

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dan Gillmor. An expert in news and media literacy, Dan Gillmor spent years covering Silicon Valley as a reporter for the San Jose Mercury News as an early proponent of journalism in the age of the Internet. Author of We the Media and Mediactive, Gillmor helps people understand how news and information are constructed and how they influence society. He developed a MOOC on media literacy at Arizona State University and is now working with Facebook to address how social media can help people navigate the flow of "fake news." During the 2017 URI Summer Institute in Digital Literacy, we will: 

  • Discuss and reflect on how literacy is changing as a result of media and technology and the implications of this cultural and technological shift for teaching and learning at all levels
  • Examine the purpose and application of various digital tools and technologies that might be used to enhance teaching, learning, and creative response in K-12, higher education, afterschool and library settings
  • Apply knowledge and skills in using digital texts, tools and technologies as demonstrated through hands-on practical creative activity
  • Engage in phases of project-based inquiry and curriculum design to explore how to integrate digital literacy into existing academic programs in both formal and informal learning environments.
