About Lucas Jacob
Back to TeamLucas Jacob serves as co-editor of the Journal of Media Literacy Education. For more than 25 years, Luke has worked as a teacher and administrator in independent schools across the United States. He is currently the Director of Writing, Communication, and Media Literacy at La Jolla Country Day School in San Diego, California. In 2004-05, he had the honor of serving as a Fulbright Teaching Fellow in Budapest, Hungary. Luke is the author of the poetry collections Sympathetic Beasts and The Seed Vault and the chapbooks A Hole in the Light and Wishes Wished Just Hard Enough. His prose and poetry have appeared in dozens of literary magazines and in trade journals including the Journal of Media Literacy, Education Week, Independent Teacher Magazine, Independent School Magazine’s Independent Ideas blog, and IEEE’s Computer Graphics and Applications. Luke's formal work in media literacy began in the 1990s, when he first taught a writing and popular culture course for teenagers. Informally, his work in the field began in the sixth grade, when he and his classmates studied consumerism and advertising and created their own ad campaigns. He speaks and presents locally, regionally, and nationally on media literacy in schools and on writing instruction pedagogy and practice. He holds a B.A. in English and African-American Studies from Carleton College and an M.A. in writing and literature from Temple University.
