My Pop Studio In Action: Girl Scouts

We worked with Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania to include My Pop Studio into a summer day camp that focused on technology.

  • Setting:  Summer Day Camp - in Girl Scouts building
  • Time Frame: 1 week, daily, 2 hour sessions
  • Computer Access:  limited--2 girls per computer
Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania aged 10-12 participated in a week-long summer day camp for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program for Girl Scouts.  For two hours of the day, they experienced the My Pop Studio curriculum led by Kelly Mendoza

The My Pop Studio implementation connected with the Technology and Engineering goals of STEM by focusing on the "behind the scenes" and "how to's" of media production.   Girls pulled the curtain from media messages and figured out how they were made, and discussed what media messages meant to them.

During five two-hour long sessions, girls played on the four modules of My Pop Studio for 45 min. to one hour, and then the rest of the time was spent discussing issues related to the online activities.  For instance, after playing Photo Fakery! in the Magazine Studio, girls delved deeper into issues of photo manipulation and how it relates to their own body image.

Girls were provided a customized booklet for the week.  The booklet included written activities to accompany the My Pop Studio games.  Every day girls would complete a few pages of the booklet, and by the end of the week, they were rewarded a "Media Smart Girls" certificate for completing all the online activities on My Pop Studio and completing the written activities in the booklet.
