Phoenixville Middle School Students Come to Temple!

Learning to Recognize and Resist Media Stereotypes

Students from the Phoenixville Middle School take an outing to Temple University for media literacy learning experiences led by members of the Media Education Lab team. Students visit WRTI radio station and take a campus tour, learning more about how media is studied at the college level and about what college life is like.

 

MEDIA LITERACY LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Identify how stereotypes of the MIddle East are conveyed through visual images, movies and other mediaand gain information about the lived experience of people from this region.

2. Reflect on how stereotypes function to interfere with genuine understanding of people from other parts of the world

3. Learn how the opening title sequence of a film works to arouse interest and create suspense for audiences

4. Learn how filmmakers create complex characters through providing information about character thoughts, dialogue, speech, behavior, appearance and the reactions of others

5.  Recognize how messages about values are conveyed through storytelling

 CAMPUS TOUR LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1.  Understand the differences between public broadcasting and commercial broadcasting and recognize  how radio programming genres attract target audiences.

2. Recognize some differences between K-12 education and university education. 

3. Identify stereotypes about college life and gain a more accurate understanding of what college students are like
