A democratic civilization will save itself only if it makes the language of the image into a stimulus for critical reflection, not an invitation to hypnosis.
Emmanuel Vaillant is a French journalist specialized in education issues (last book: Bonnes nouvelles de l’école, édition Lattes, 2017). He is the co-founder and the executive director of la ZEP (Zone d’Expression Prioritaire), a non-profit organisation which is both a media project and a media education tool. The aim is to help young people, in most cases from underprivileged districts, with self-expression and media literacy by running writing and media creation workshops led by professional journalists. As a visiting scholar at the Media Education Lab and Columbia College Chicago, Emmanuel will work with Yonty Friesem on civic media initiatives in Chicago and New Mexico as well as on the revival of the Youth Media Reporter.
