In this second webinar, we will explore the future of work that is at the centre of debates related to the emerging digital society. Concerns range from the inclusion, equity, and dignity of those at the far end of the value chain, who participate on and off platforms, often in the shadows, invisible to policymakers, designers, and consumers. Precarity and informality characterize this largely female workforce, across sectors ranging from artisanal work to salon services to ride hailing and construction. A feminist reimagining of the futures of work—what the speakers term as “FemWork” —is the need of the day and should manifest in multiple and various forms, placing the worker at the core and drawing on her experiences, aspirations, and realities. This talk with the speakers and FemLab co-founders Usha Raman and Payal Arora offers grounded insights from their years of engagements with academic, activist, legal, development and design groups that can help rethink through these inclusive futures and possibly create digital, social, and governance infrastructures of work that are fairer and more meaningful.

Presenters:
Usha Raman is a feminist media scholar, a Professor in the Department of Communication, University of Hyderabad where her teaching and research interests focus on digital culture, feminist media studies, civic engagement and media pedagogy. She is the Co-founder of FemLab.co, a feminist future of work initiative, and Vice-President of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR).
Payal Arora is a digital anthropologist, a Professor in Technology, Values, and Global Media Cultures at Erasmus University Rotterdam, Director in UX and Inclusive Design at the Erasmus Centre for Data Analytics, and Co-founder of FemLab.co, a feminist future of work initiative. Her expertise lies in two decades of user experience among low-income communities in the Global South to build inclusive designs.
The ‘Inequalities and Media Education’ (IME) webinar series explores the relationship between media and inequalities as well as justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the (digital) media literacy and education space. The webinar series aims to ask critical questions and delve deeper into current research conducted globally to understand how scholars have studied and aimed at reducing inequalities along with ramifications for media literacy and education.
