This presentation presents two workshops designed to examine the role of voice-centered media practices in fostering public engagement and supporting academic research within a media landscape dominated by platform capitalism.
In the ‘Let’s Read the “Terms of Service” Out Loud!’ workshop, participants explored the often-overlooked implications of digital media and platform use. This activity raises awareness of the personal data exchange inherent in platform capitalism.
In the "Telephonoscope," we created an experimental medium that combines digital apps with classic black dial phones, allowing participants to share personal stories. These media practices provide alternative ways to engage with media platforms, encouraging reflection on their social effects.
Voice-based storytelling can bridge the gap between academic researchers and the public, leading to deeper insights into digital media by creating small, networked media sanctuaries where people can relearn media literacy and practices.
