WHY DIGITAL AND MEDIA LITERACY MATTERS NOW
Libraries are learning organizations. It’s been said that the best way to learn something is to teach it to others. Reflect on the motivations and values that shape your thoughts and feelings about the many different types of media you use every day: books, movies, video games, TV shows, music, social media, and more. Consider how analyzing and creating content has reflected and shaped your own identity as a family member, friend, learner, and library professional. Get inspired by practical examples of how school, public, and academic librarians from across the US have using digital and media literacy learning experiences to activate student creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking. Digital and media literacy helps to make learning (and teaching) a joyful experience as students build their identities as members of a knowledge community whose authentic voices support and serve the common good.
Learning Goals:
- Understand why digital and media literacy is a moving target that changes in response to
changing culture, platforms, and technologies. - Reflect on how your identity, life experience, and your own media use choices shape your views
about the benefits and risks of digital and social media - Appreciate the key elements and best practices of all the new literacies that have been developing over 60 years
- Gain knowledge about innovative approaches to digital and media literacy that have been
developed by school, academic, and public librarians. - Be inspired to join with others to help advance the practice of digital and media literacy in your
community.
