Together We Rise: December 2025

Dear friends of the Media Education Lab community,

Like many of you, we are still processing the school shooting that took place at Brown University last week and the days of fear and anxiety that followed. Many members of the MEL community, including myself, live, work, teach, and study in and around Providence, Rhode Island. Many of you reached out to us in the past days, appreciating the heartsick feelings we experienced.

We are grieving for and with the family members and loved ones of those who were harmed. We also send warmth, care, and solidarity to the students, educators, and staff of Brown University, and to our friends and colleagues in Providence and the broader Rhode Island community. Living through this trauma has been difficult. Thank you for being courageous throughout it all.

In that spirit, we’d like to invite you to join us for an end of year meeting of Together We Rise.

DATE: Monday, December 29

TIME: 1 PM EST

LOCATION: Online. Click here to register.

This is an informal dialogue and discussion space to be together, to share experiences if you wish, and to remind one another that we are part of a supportive community that cares deeply about learning, justice, and human dignity. We’ll also spend a little time reflecting together on how media shaped this ordeal, for better and for worse, and how we make sense of it as educators and learners. Please join us if you can!

With care and solidarity,

Renee, Yonty, Catherine, Marie, Wes, Aurra and all of us at the Media Education Lab
