Two Workshops on Digital Literacy Presented in Portuguese

The Media Education Lab is delighted to sponsor two interactive workshops in Central Falls, presented by Professor Carla Viana Coscarelli of Brazil, Professor of Linguistic Studies who is a Visiting Scholar at the School of Education at URI during the academic year of 2013/2014, working in collaboration with Julie Coiro. Professor Coscarelli will be interacting with participants in her native language of Portuguese, thanks to Denise DeBarros, academic sponsor of the Central Falls Cape Verdean Student Association, who is hosting the event at Calcutt Middle School.

Workshop 1: The Challenges of Publishing Information On The Internet

In today’s world, anyone with a computer and an Internet connection can publish information for everyone to read.  However, we don’t often consider how much responsibility is involved when we share information on the Internet, even in closed social networks. In this session, you are invited into a conversation about how to share information responsibly and ethically as we participate in social networking spaces.  We will talk about what should or should not be posted on social networks and how to better understand the consequences of our decisions.   

 

Together, we will consider the consequences of each publication we make on the Internet, especially in terms of how it might impact our personal and professional relationships. We’ll consider questions such as: Is this information that I really want to make public – now, forever, and everywhere? Is there the possibility that this publication hurt somebody?  Is it fair and honest?  Is this the best way to solve my problem or communicate these ideas?   These questions are among the many we need to ask ourselves before pressing the Enter key in a socially networked space.

Workshop 1: Os Desafios de Publicar Informação na Internet

 

No mundo de hoje qualquer pessoa com um computador e conectado à Internet pode publicar informações para todo mundo ler. No entanto, nem sempre consideramos quanta responsabilidade está envolvida quanto compartilhamos informações na internet, mesmo em redes sociais fechadas. Nessa sessão, você está convidado a participar de uma conversa sobre como compartilhamos informação com responsabilidade e ética quando participamos de redes sociais. Vamos falar sobre o que deve ou não ser postado em redes sociais e como compreender melhor as consequências das nossas decisões.

Juntos, vamos considerar as consequências de cada publicação que fazermos na Internet, especialmente em termos do seu impacto nas nossas relações pessoais e profissionais. Vamos considerar questões como: Essa é uma informação que eu quero tornar pública agora, para sempre e em qualquer lugar? Essa publicação vai magoar alguém? Ela é justa, correta? Esse é a melhor maneira de resolver esse problema ou de comunicar isso? Essas perguntas estão entre muitas outras que precisamos nos fazer antes de apertar a tecla Enter em uma rede social.

                              

Workshop 2: Overly Attached Girlfriends and So Much More! Thinking Critically and Composing Creatively in a Digital World

Digital environments offer so many unique opportunities for people to express themselves and share ideas with others. Many of today’s teens and young adults use digital technologies to explore how images, verbal texts, and varied designs can be put together to reflect interesting ways of thinking about life. Meme is one of them. A meme is an idea that changes in interesting ways as it spreads from person to person in a culture. At first, these unique texts might seem like just a joke. However, when we look closer, these new text forms are usually very critical ways of treating with irony many aspects of our society, our behaviors, and our cultural values. Often, these are texts that make us think about us as individuals and as a society.

 

In this presentation, you are invited into a discussion about how we can better connect with today’s youth by working with the unique digital texts that they read, share, comment on, and even produce and publish. These connections between their lives at home and at school are essential to make learning meaningful and to support our youth as they learn how to be critical and responsible readers and writers in a digital age.

Workshop 2: Namorada Sinistra e muito mais! Pensando Criticamente e Produzindo Criativamente no Mundo Digital

 

Ambientes digitais fornecem muitas oportunidades únicas para as pessoas se expressarem e trocarem ideias com as outras. Muitos adolescentes e jovens usam as tecnologias digitais para explorar como imagens, textos verbais e vários designs ou leiautes podem ser usados para mostrar interessantes formas de pensar sobre a vida. O Meme é uma dessas formas. Um meme é uma ideia que se transforma maneiras muito interessantes quando vai passando de pessoa para pessoa em uma cultura. Eles podem ser vistos, num primeiro e rápido olhar, apenas como uma brincadeira, no entanto, esses textos costumam ser muito críticos e tratar com ironia muitos aspectos da nossa sociedade, nossos comportamentos e nossos valores. Normalmente, são textos que nos fazem pensar sobre nós mesmos como indivíduos e como sociedade.

Nessa apresentação, você é convidado para uma discussão sobre como podemos conectar melhor com os jovens, trabalhando com textos digitais que eles leem, compartilham, comentam e mesmo produzem e publicam. Essas conexões entre a vida desses aprendizes em casa e na escola é essencial para tornar a aprendizagem significativa para eles e ajudando-os a serem leitores e autores críticos, conscientes e responsáveis nessa era digital.
