Elizaveta Friesem is an interdisciplinary scholar with an international background who works on problematizing the common understanding of media—including its relationship to self, meaning, and power. She is an editor of the Journal of Media Literacy Education and an educator currently teaching courses at Columbia College Chicago. Passionate about using empathy to bridge ideological and cultural divides, Elizaveta is exploring how media literacy education can be enriched through principles of nonviolent communication. She is the author of the book “Media is us: Understanding communication and moving beyond blame” (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021).
