Congratulations to MediaEd Institute Graduates

A 6-Week Deep Dive Professional Program for Emerging and Established Leaders

 

More than 50 educators from four continents participated in the 2024 MediaEd Institute, a six-week leadership development program for emerging and established leaders in media literacy education. 

 

Building upon the success of the University of Rhode Island's Summer Institute in Digital Literacy (SIDL), the Media Education Education offered a new approach that included a mix of "real time" learning on Zoom and "anytime" learning on the Media Education Lab's Pathwright learning management system. 

 

The 22-hour online leadership program was convened by Yonty Friesem and Renee Hobbs of the Media Education Lab, in partnership with Troy Hicks, a professor at Central Michigan University and one of the nation’s leading experts in digital writing. 

 

Other faculty members of the program included Kristin Ziemke, William Yang, Paul Tomizawa, Sue Luft, Meredith Dutra, Michael Spikes, Kara Clayton, Kristin Hokanson, Jami Rhue, Mary Kate Lonergan, John Palella, Carlos Cruz, Michael RobbGrieco, Angie Hartley, Wes Fryer, Mark Davis, Yvette Coyle Black, Estefania Sánchez Auñón, Pedro Antonio Ferez Mora, Scott Moss, and Pamela Morris. 

 

Running in February and March of 2024, participants learned about the theory and practice of digital and media literacy education as it applies to a variety of  learning contexts. They also had opportunities to delve into five microcredential courses that included exploring and creating with generative AI in a program on critical AI literacy and creating infographics to enhance their understanding of visual literacy. They considered the socio-emotional dimensions of leadership and strategies for developing critical thinking skills in response to the rise of conspiracy theories. In a unique multilingual component of the program, participants explored how to teach media literacy in the context of the use of movies in the foreign language classroom. They could access program materials in English and Spanish.  

 

More than 50 participants attended the online program from North America, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Throughout the 6-week program, participants engaged in dialogue and collaboration with fellow educators, activists, and community leaders, fostering a supportive and diverse professional network for sharing ideas and best practices in media literacy education. The Gupta Family Foundation provided financial support for participants who received scholarships to defray the cost of the program.
