Authors, Koen Leurs, Çiğdem Bozdağ, Annamária Neag, and Sanne Sprenger discuss their chapter, ‘Participatory Action Research and Media Literacy: Towards Engaged, Accountable, and Collaborative Knowledge Production with Marginalized Communities’. This is part of the edited volume, ‘Media Literacy and Media Education Research Methods: A Handbook’ by Pierre Fastrez and Normand Landry published by Routledge.

Dr. Çiğ
dem Bozdağ is an assistant professor at the Research Centre for Media and Journalism Studies at the University of Groningen. Bozdağ is at the same time a Marie Sklodowska Curie Fellow in the Faculty of Education at the University of Bremen with her project INCLUDED (2019-2023). Bozdag’s research interests include Digital Media Use, Digital Literacy, Digital Inclusion, Media Education in Schools, Media and Migration. Bozdag recently co-edited the journal special issue Inclusive Media Literacy Education for Diverse Societies for Media and Communication (2022).
Dr. Annamária Neag is an assistant professor at the University of Groningen. She just finished leading an international research project focusing on digital civic activism at Charles University, in Prague. Annamária also received a prestigious EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship, through which she researched the lived media experiences of unaccompanied refugee youth across four European countries.
Sanne Sprenger is a lecturer in media practice and community art at the Department of Media and Culture, Utrecht University, the Netherlands. She is also co-founder of the Common Frames foundation and project developer for film education, media literacy and community art.
Koen Leurs is an associate professor in Gender, Media and Migration Studies at the Graduate Gender Program, Department of Media and Culture, Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He previously co-edited the Handbook of Media and Migration (Sage, 2020) and the special issues Inclusive media education for diverse societies (Media & Communication, 2022). He has published Digital Passages. Migrant youth 2.0. Diaspora, Gender & Youth Cultural Intersections (Amsterdam University Press, 2015) and his latest book is Digital Migration (Sage, 2023).

The ‘Inequalities and Media Education’ (IME) webinar series explores the relationship between media and inequalities as well as justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the (digital) media literacy and education space. The webinar series aims to ask critical questions and delve deeper into current research conducted globally to understand how scholars have studied and aimed at reducing inequalities along with ramifications for media literacy and education.
