Youth Media, Media Literacy, and Bridge Building

Youth Media Join us for a webinar exploring how youth media production activities can help bridge the gaps and divides in our society and address the roots of violent extremism. Equip yourself with the tools and insights needed to become a courageous communicator in an age of discord.

This webinar is part of Courageous Rhode Island Youth Media Contest, an initiative designed to empower youth to amplify positive messages that improve the quality of civic discourse. Media literacy and active listening can help people recognize and resist disinformation, hoaxes, conspiracy theories and other forms of media that promote fear and hate.

Speaker: Benjamin Thevenin is an Associate Professor in Media Arts at Brigham Young University. His scholarly and creative work focuses on media literacy, civic engagement, the environment, film, and new media. His book Making Media Matter: Critical Literacy, Popular Culture, and Creative Production is a resource for media educators interested in integrating critical inquiry and creative expression, politics and play in their pedagogy. He teaches courses in media education, children’s media, new media, pop culture and ecomedia literacy, and he collaborates with his students and colleagues on creative work including games, films, podcasts, VR, web-series and so on.
