Help students acquire digital and media literacy competencies with Renee Hobbs' Media Literacy in Action: Questioning the Media, in the newly released second edition published by Rowman and Littlefield.

Media literacy is now gaining traction in fields including media and communication, rhetoric and composition, the arts and education, business and computer science.

All participants received a free Teachers Guide and reviewed some of the rich content on the companion website.

Renee Hobbs celebrated the launch of her book's second edition, highlighting its collaborative creation and innovative features. The book, designed for media literacy educators, includes a Teacher's Guide, inquiry-based questions, and activities like creating infographics and analyzing media. Teachers who have used the book in colleges, universities, and in upper-level courses in high school shared their experiences and looked at the new content on AI and machine learning, algorithmic personalization, media regulation, and big data, privacy, and surveillance. Hobbs emphasized the importance of the protection-empowerment dialectic and the role of media literacy in fostering critical thinking. Participants also discussed the challenges of teaching media literacy, such as rebuilding trust in news sources and addressing AI's impact. The session featured a student's revised slide deck to aid instructors, underscoring the collaborative spirit of the project.

Special guests included some of the many talented people who made important contributions to the 2nd edition, including

  • Natalie Mandziuk, Executive Editor, Bloomsbury USA
  • Yu Ozaki, Assistant Acquisitions Editor, Bloomsbury USA
  • Mark J. Davis, PhD, Educator and Graphic Designer
