Did you know that a low-quality 5-second AI-generated video requires roughly 42,000 times more energy than a single text prompt, equivalent to running a microwave for an hour? In developing AI-generative media literacy skill sets, this is just one of dozens of considerations unique to AI-generative images, video, and audio media that educators and students should understand when evaluating the ethical considerations, potential benefits, harmful impact mitigation strategies, and use cases of these tools and content.
Out of concern that important elements of AI-generated media have not been sufficiently addressed in broader AI literacy education, Scott Spicer has been developing an accessible online resource designed to inform, be supported by research, and serve as a catalyst for critical discussions in the classroom and beyond. In this webinar, Scott will present the latest draft of this resource, inviting participants to provide feedback on how it can be strengthened and applied in their learning environments.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Scott Spicer
Scott Spicer is Media Outreach Librarian for the University of Minnesota Libraries. As head of Media Services, he develops media literacy skill-sets and promotes deeper subject knowledge and meaningful, authentic learning experiences through course integration of student-created media projects. He is the author of the book, "Student-Created Media: Designing Research, Learning, and Skill-Building Experiences" (ALA Editions, 2022).
