Introducing the Media Dictionary

Media Dictionary is an audiovisual, multilingual, and digital community media initiative that was initiated in 2021 with the primary objective of engaging with diverse communities across India on issues related to media literacy in local languages and dialects. More than 50 volunteers have posted more than 1,000 videos in 35 languages and dialects. Check out their YouTube page! 

Join us to learn about this important national initiative and consider the opportunities and challenges faced by the Media Dictionary team. Meet in a small group to discuss potential future directions of efforts like this.

 Why is media literacy important in modern society? What kind of challenges does it address?

 If you are asked to start a media literacy-related initiative, what would you do, from where you will start?

 What are your thoughts about the role and effectiveness of initiatives such as the Media Dictionary? Do you know of other similar initiatives? Can you talk about how they might be similar to/different from what the Media Dictionary does?

 One way to increase awareness about media literacy is to include it in curricula at schools and colleges. Apart from that, what do you think are some other strategies that can be used to increase media literacy?


Dr. Jatin Srivastavais is Professor and Director at E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Ohio University. His research is rooted in theory-based exploration of the new media environment and his teaching experience ranges from graduate seminars in mass communication theory and research methods to undergraduate courses on graphic design and media literacy.

Dr. Vijayta Tanejais an Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, DIHE-JIMS Noida. She started her career as News Desk Executive with PTC News; New Delhi in 2008.She has been in the field of teaching since 2009. During last 14 years, she has worked with various educational institutions affiliated to Punjabi University (Patiala), Guru Nanak Dev University (Amritsar), IP University (New Delhi) and CCS University, Meerut. She has also worked with All India Radio as compere for programme 'Yuvavani' for three years. She received her Ph.D. in Journalism and Mass Communication from Punjabi University Patiala in April 2019. She is also a GNI Trainer under Data Leads and trainer for 'BBC Young Reporter India Initiative' and has conducted training sessions for various institutions regarding the menace of Fake News and Fact Checking. Her research interests span both print media and international communication.

Bhavna Pathak is National Secretary, International Association of Women Media Teachers (IAWMT) || Working Committee Member of Global Media Education Council || Founding Member Dictionary Digital Community Media Platform || Factshala Trainer || Media Literacy Activist || Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication, Prestige Institute of Management and Research, Indore, India. Ms. Pathak is graduate and recipient of silver jubilee award, and excellence academic award of Miranda House College, University of Delhi. After Completion of her PG Diploma in Hindi Journalism from Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Delhi, she worked with newspapers like Jansatta, Amar Ujala, Sahar Samay, Nai Dunia as freelance journalist. She has worked in Radio Industry as an RJ, Programming Head and Radio consultant for seven years with Radio Stations like Radio Dhamaal of E24 Group in Hisar and Jabalpur, with 94.3 MY FM Radio Station of Dainik Bhaskar Group in Indore and Bhopal, Radio Rangila of RenekaFincom. She started her academic journey in year 2016 from Prestige Institute of Management and Research, Indore. She has presented several research papers in International and National Conferences. She is certified Factshala trainer which is an initiative of India Media Literacy Network started by Internews in association with DataLEADS and Google News Initiative.
